WLAN on N95

I got a new N95 today and have hit a problem straight away.
I cannot connect to my home WLAN.

This is what I have done.
I have set up an access point.
Selected WLAN as data bearer put in the correct SSID.
Tried both public a and hidden in network status.
Put Infrastructure in network mode.
Put open network in security mode.

Every time I get an instant response of 'No WLAN found'

How do I resolve this. The signal is very strong and my PDA and laptop work.

Re: WLAN on N95

I've got an N95 and it works fine on my home WLAN (Netgear router).

First I added my phone's MAC address to the Netgear configuration (I only allow specific devices to connect). By "dialing" the code *#MAC WLAN# ( same as *#62209526# ) on the phone standby display, the phone will show the MAC address. It is also printed on the label under the battery.

On the phone, my access point settings are:
Connection name: WHATEVER NAME YOU WISH TO USE
Data bearer: Wireless LAN
WLAN network name: YOUR SSID
Network status: Hidden
WLAN network mode: Infrastructure
WLAN security mode: WPA/WPA2
WLAN security settings:
- WPA/WPA2: Pre-shared key
- Pre-shared key: YOUR KEY
- WPA2 only mode: Off
Homepage: None

No changes in "Advanced settings" (using defaults).

In addition, in the browser app (Web) settings under "General" I have "Always ask" for "Access point".
The facts expressed in my posts belong to everybody, the opinions belong to me. The distinction is yours to draw.

Re: WLAN on N95

Hi there!

My WiFi connection works and is set up very similar to yours but it only works for a short while and then eventually times out with a message of 'No Gateway' or something like that, then the phone WiFi and connections lock up the phone. I can continue using the phone but can't do anything with the web and connections as it's locked, i then have to restart the phone.

Any ideas what i can do to get it working continuously?

Same problem here, we have two N95, firstly took ages to connect, then did after a hour or so trying, we didn't do anything different, it get's online (via my Sky Broadband Router), it works for a little while then just stops, most times you get "no gateway" (I think that is what it says). I phoned Vodafone they have no idea? It doesn't very often say "connected" on the front of the phone, it says 'access point name' found. It then says Refreshing. Sometimes 1 out of 10, will say 'connected' Can anyone help?

Re: WLAN on N95

Hello

I recieved my N95 yesterday, everything seemed fine until last night.
I was using the web'n'Walk function and it just cut off and now it does not want to work at all, basically it will not let me connect to the internet.

I spoke to T-mobile and they don't have the configuration setting(they may get them in about 2 weeks.

Unsure of what to do now, has anyone else had this problem and could point me in the right direction.

Many Thanks

Re: WLAN on N95

I have just received an N95, expecting to use it extensively on WLAN. Configuring was easy (though I did not like that I had to 'unhide' the SSID on the router). All appeared well: I had a strong 54Mbs signal until I tried to connect to the Internet. Then the dreaded "No gateway reply" appears, and appears and appears (despite my best efforts and the assistance of others on this forum). Furthermore, there appears to be no way to adjust anything - in spite of the copious suggestions made by others - for which thank you all. Also, there is no apparent way to access WLAN services which need a registration form - for example iPass - if you are in an airport/station: this is a nonsense.

One of the reasons that I wanted WLAN was for Skype, etc. For those who do not know, Fring's software is NOT compatible with the N95 (and its answer to my request was so negative that Fring deserves no more ...). Skype via Fring on an N95 will not work.

I also looked at a variety of other software - also incompatible with the N95.

I have looked for Nokia support. Aside from the fact that large chunks of its Web site seem unable to deliver (including the manuals) which is pathetic, no one from Nokia seems to monitor or participate in its own forums so as to provide help. I guess that Nokia also just does not care. (Nokia cannot blame O2, Vodafone, etc. for non telephone - like WLAN - problems: these belong to Nokia.)

Ergo, my current conclusion - based on my own experience plus those of you here - is that the N95 is an unsupported experiment in which Nokia has little interest and where support for what could be an incredible platform is lacking. My N95 goes back (unless a miracle happens); I suppose I will have to keep my pokey Motorola until some other manufactuere grows up (the Samsung Blackjack looks interesting).

My recommendation to anyone wishing to use WLAN/Internet access on the N95 is AVOID the N95. It is not worth the bother. Also, do not expect to be able to charge your N95 off your PC USB cable: this is so logical, and is another reason to keep the horrible Motorola.

Re: WLAN on N95

I've been having the same problems on my n95, but i think i may have found a fix! What i did was go to settings, then connection and select wireless lan. Now set it to show wireless lan availability. I'm not sure if this alone will fix it, i then went on to play with the advanced settings and turned power saver mode off, but just getting the phone to scan for networks automatically may provide a work-around?

Re: WLAN on N95

Well same problem straight after purchasing... First of all thanks for all the ideas to everybody on the forum, second of all I think I found the answer in mechanimal82' post. The issue is the power saver mode in advanced settings as I turned it off and it started to work instantly. So do not give up to easily. Have a nice browsing...

Re: WLAN on N95

I have had my N95 3 days and I have the same problem; I was using the internet, then it just cut out! And now I cannot use the WLAN or any of the internet functions. It seems that the software operating the Internet function has been erased!

Angry!

Re: WLAN on N95

I'm using my N95 in home WLAN without any problems (Buffalo 802.11B/G something AP, WEP encryption, SSID hidden).
Are you using MAC filtering or some other 'sophisticated' :smileyhappy: access control that might cause this?

Re: WLAN on N95

I've tried all the workarounds mentioned; turning off WLAN power save, setting to scan for networks every minute, but it still won't connect to the WLAN at work. It's got a Hidden SSID, using 128 bit WEP, Open Authentication. I don't know if it's a problem with the hidden SSID, (I've set it to hidden in the Access Point settings), or the fact that there are about 10 Cisco Access points serving the network..

I've got it working fine at home on my WPA network, no problems, worked first time.

Any more ideas to try gratefully recieved.

Re: WLAN on N95

We probably need to be a bit more scientific about this, if not for our benefit, but for the Nokia guys who (I hope!) are reading this and working on a software patch.

I've started compiling a list of all the working and non-working WLAN configurations that have on my N95, and put them in a google spreadsheet here:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pw40UkeFlF22O14dHf7lreA

If people post in this thread the working and non working configurations that they have found, and any workarounds they have needed to do on the N95 to get that configuration to work, I'll add them in to the spreadsheet to keep a central list. That way we may find a pattern to what works and what doesn't.

Cheers,

Re: WLAN on N95

Good idea Treacle. However, you may be bein overoptimistic. I do not believe that Nokia pays any attention to these discussions (it is 10+ days since these problems were reprted - and there is no input or recognition that I can see from Nokia). "It knows best", which in most cases means it cannot be bothered to do anything. I have had a similar experience before on a different Nokia product, with no response from Nokia.

I have returned my N95 - a pity because it could have been neat. That store has now put off several other people, not least pointing to this discussion.

Nokia does not understand, from my perspective, anything beyond the phone part. (Perhaps ironically, Microsoft seems to have it right - after 10+ years of effort: I now have a phone with Windows Mobile: WLAN works, the phone is good and even Skype runs acceptably over WLAN: it is both phone and system.)

Nokia do not take any notice of this discussion board. I'm on my second N95, I have WLAN issues and more importantly the HIGH PITCH NOISE coming from the phone while on a call or left on the side, when every the screen it lit up the noise is there, you only notice it when you are on the phone and it is driving ME MAD. I have emailed Club Nokia about three times, giving them links to their own Discussion board, telling them, I'm not the only person with this problem and all they do is give me details of their repair centre. I too I'm rejecting the N95, shame great phone, by at almost £200 per handset (which I have purchased two for our bussiness) and all four handsets (two replacments) have the same fault, it is no a joke! Nokia appear not to care about the problem.

Re: WLAN on N95

Came to this forum hoping to find solution to my N95 failing to drop a WLAN conectiononce established and then burning out the battery in about 3 hours.

Instead I find a lot of people with similar problems.

Perhaps the Phone companies don't want mobile users linking to WLAN so the settings from your service provider are creating these problems.

Just a thought. Do all O2 users have a similar fault to mine?

Re: WLAN on N95

generally, i'm quite happy with my n95. its for personal use but i have had it working in a corporate environment and making calls over the wlan quite happily. however, not using 802.1x / WPA enterprise which is what my primary niggle is about.

i have also had problems with the wlan wizard locking up when connecting to a Check Point safe@ office wireless router / firewall. settings of...

hidden SSID
WPA - PSK (TKIP)
DHCP

the 802.lx settings are...

public ssid
WPA Enterprise
>>>>>EAP-PEAP (inner MSCHAP-V2 backed off to radius server)
TKIP
DHCP

Yep, I'm generally happy, it does loads more in easier ways that lots of other phones I've had.

Well folks, even if Nokia aren't reading this, I still its worth collecting settings that work and don't, even for our own benefit.

Thanks for the settings joll200x, I'll add them in to the list! The settings you list, are they non-working ones? If so, can you provide details of WLAN configs that you have had working for comparison?

Cheers,
Treacle

Re: WLAN on N95

It might be worth mentioning what mobile network you are on, although I assume they all have the same firmware revn at the moment? I'm on Vodafone uk, with firmware V10.0.018
